Roofs: They're Definitely at the Top!

You can say a lot of things about roofs, and most of them might be true. But one thing that nobody can argue with is that roofs are tops. This statement can be taken in several ways. A roof does for the top of your home. It can also act like a "top" or lid for your home, keeping the rain out. Then, there's the third meaning, which is the one we happen to like the most: roofs are the best. (People say things are "tops" when they really like them.) Since we like roofs so much, we've decided to write about them, and you've discovered the blog where we do that.

Signs You Need Roof Tile Repair

Brian Riley

Roof tiles can be made from a wide array of materials, including asphalt, ceramic materials, concrete, or stone. Regardless of what type of roof tile is on your roof, the signs that you need roof tile repair tend to be similar. Below are three of the most common signs that you may see if you have tiles that are in need of repairs.

You Can See Visible Cracks or Damage

One of the tell-tale signs that you need roof tile repair is seeing cracks or damage to the roof tiles. Hail, debris, and even wind may cause damage to a roof tile. You may see dings, dents, cracks, or chips on the tile or you may see pieces missing from the tile. If you can see that your tiles are damaged, they need repair. It is important to note that it is also recommended that you have an annual roofing inspection and have your roof inspected after a large storm. This is because you may not be able to see all cracks or damage from the ground. A roofing professional will be able to look at your tiles during an inspection and tell what condition they are in.

Algae or Plants Are Growing on the Tiles

Another sign that is indicative of needing roof tile repair is seeing algae or plant growth on the tiles. If you see algae or plant growth, this means that there is moisture on your roof. Water should be flowing down your roof, not sitting on your roof. If a roofing tile is cracked or damaged, water may not flow over the tile, and instead, get stuck or trapped in the crack. This allows algae or plants to begin to grow.

There Are Water Stains or Musty Smells Below the Roof

The final sign that you need roof tile repair is seeing water staining or smelling musty scents below the roof. Most houses have a crawl space or an attic space directly below the roof. If you are in the space, you can look up and see the underside of your roof. If that space smells musty or you see water stains on the underside of your roof, water is likely leaking in. If water is leaking in, you may have damaged or missing tiles on your roof.

Depending on the severity of the damage, you may need to have the damaged roof tiles removed and replaced, or you may need to have your entire roof re-roofed. If you see one or more of the signs listed above, contact a roofing professional who offers roof tile repair. They can inspect your roof and help you determine what types of repairs may be needed or whether it is time to invest in a new roof.
