Roofs: They're Definitely at the Top!

You can say a lot of things about roofs, and most of them might be true. But one thing that nobody can argue with is that roofs are tops. This statement can be taken in several ways. A roof does for the top of your home. It can also act like a "top" or lid for your home, keeping the rain out. Then, there's the third meaning, which is the one we happen to like the most: roofs are the best. (People say things are "tops" when they really like them.) Since we like roofs so much, we've decided to write about them, and you've discovered the blog where we do that.

Does Your Roof Need Professional Repairs?

Brian Riley

As a homeowner who has a million things going on in your life, it can be difficult to try to lead your hectic lifestyle while also maintaining your property. Oftentimes, it is not until something significant occurs that you notice that something is wrong in your home. As far as your roof goes, it's important to have a roofing professional perform routine inspections to detect problems before they have a chance to occur. You can also perform routine checks yourself to identify problems that you can detect. Here are a few signs to look for that will let you know that your roof needs repairs.

Curling Shingles

If you notice that your shingles are curling at their ends, this is a sign that they have been exposed to water and may be nearing the end of their life. These shingles will require some maintenance or may need to be repaired. If the shingles are cracked or missing altogether, then they will need to be replaced as soon as possible to minimize the potential damage.

Loose Granules

If your roof is made of asphalt or composite shingles, you will want to be on the lookout for signs of granules or small pieces of shingles in the gutters or the yard. When you see this, it is a sign that your roof needs repair. Loose granules indicate that the shingles are deteriorating due to decomposition.

Moss Growth

The main thing that you have to worry about with moss is that it has the potential to damage the structure of your roof. Moss will thrive in a moist, shaded environment where it will absorb the moisture from that environment and allow roots to grow on the roof. These roots can then cause your shingles to lift up and allow more moisture to come in. As a result, the mold and bacteria continue to grow, becoming more of a problem. Eventually, you will be dealing with interior leaks and damage.

Leaks

Even if you go without noticing all of the other signs mentioned here, the one sign that you are likely to notice that will let you know your roof needs to undergo repair is a roof leak. Regardless of its size, a leak can let moisture seep between the cracks and soak your roofing material. Eventually, this leak will deteriorate everything until it gets all the way to the interior of your home where you start to notice the discoloration of your sheetrock on the ceiling and/or walls.
